Angry clashes broke out in a Los Angeles neighborhood last night as police officers evicted squatters from state-owned homes.

For the second consecutive night, housing rights activists in the LA neighborhood of El Sereno have laid claim to vacant homes owned by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers wearing riot gear could be seen clashing violently with the activists and taking several into custody.

During Wednesday night’s demonstration, a teenager was pinned to the ground by officers after she was forcibly removed from a house alongside her mother.

Video footage circulating on Twitter showed the teenage girl being forcibly carried from a property by two officers.

Protesters could be heard shouting at the officers, calling them ‘nasty’.

The girl is pinned to the ground and placed in handcuffs before being carried off to a police vehicle.

Street Watch LA condemned the incident on Twitter: ‘Tonight in El Sereno, CHP evicted a mom and child reclaiming rightful public land.

‘They dragged a CHILD from her home, pinned and arrested her. This is how @CaltransHQ @CHPsouthern treat families in need of shelter.’

On Wednesday, the CHP went door to door removing people who were illegally occupying the homes along Sheffield Avenue.

Around 100 officers responded to the neighbourhood incident on Wednesday, according to a report in ABC 7. Thursday’s estimates are not yet known.

Demonstrators cited the government’s stay-at-home order to prevent the spread of coronavirus as one of the reasons to stop the evictions from going ahead.

Caltrans, or the California Department of Transportation, bought the homes with the intention of demolishing them to make way for the 710 freeway, but plans stalled in 2018.

Activist group Reclaiming Our Homes started illegally occupying Caltrans-owned homes in the area in March.
