Father accused of killing his 17-year-old daughter Bernadette Walker ‘sent messages from her phone’

Parents of dead 17-year-old Bernadette Walker ‘sent messages from her phone to make people think she was still alive’ – court hears – as father is accused of her murder but charge against mother is dropped

  • Bernadette Walker, 17, was reported missing by her parents Sarah and Scott
  • Body still not found and on September 14 parents were charged with murder
  • Today prosecutors told Old Bailey the charge against Sarah had been dropped

The parents of a dead teenager sent messages from her phone to make people think she was alive, a court heard today, as her father appeared accused of murder but the charge against her mother was dropped.

Bernadette Walker, 17, was reported missing by her parents Sarah and Scott Walker, 37 and 50, on July 21 after she had not been seen for three days.

They took part in a major public appeal for information but Bernadette’s body was never found.

Police launched a ‘no body’ murder investigation on September 11 and charged the parents three days later.

But prosecutors announced today that charges have been dropped against Sarah Walker and only Scott stands accused of murder.

Both parents are charged with two counts of perverting the course of justice after they allegedly sent messages from Bernadette’s phone to give the impression she was alive.

The parents also provided false information to police over her disappearance, the Old Bailey heard today.

Bernadette’s body has still not been found and police have been seen searching the family home.

Sarah had urged the public to help putting up posters as part of an appeal for information about her daughter.

She said: ‘We have had no contact with her since 1am on July 20, when she texted me to say she would be home soon.

‘None of her friends have heard from her and she’s not accessed social media.’

‘I can’t eat or sleep properly. I miss and love my eldest princess so much, she’s missing out on her baby sister, who has learned to smile and coo already.

‘I have to think that she is hiding at one of her friend’s homes, worried about coming home now that the police will want to speak to her, I can’t think of any alternative scenarios, I just can’t.

‘I know my baby girl wouldn’t be out in the open. She’s scared of being out in the dark alone, that’s what makes me think she’s at a friend’s house.

‘I just wish someone would just say she’s here and she’s safe. I want to cuddle her, but right now I’d accept that she’s safe and well.”

Scott also appealed for information, saying: ‘You can imagine how much we are both worried.

‘We miss you. We need to know that you’re safe. We love you.’

The parents claim they received a text from Sarah on July 20 at 1am saying she would be coming home but she did not arrive.

Bernadette, a Peterborough Regional College student, was reported missing the next day and police came to the five-bedroom council house to take samples from her tooth and hair brushes.

The couple appeared at the Old Bailey today over video-link from HMP Peterborough for the brief hearing.

They spoke to confirm their names and were both remanded into custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing at the Old Bailey on 29 January.

Sarah and Scott Walker, both of Millfield, Peterborough, are both charged with two counts of perverting the course of justice.

Scott Walker alone is charged with murder.
