A four-wheel-drive with its owner in the driver’s seat was swamped by heavy waves after getting bogged near the water’s edge on a popular tourist beach in New South Wales.

Video of the wild incident at Nine Mile Beach in Lake Macquarie, north of Sydney, shows the Land Rover Defender getting hit with a barrage of breaking waves with the driver still inside.

A shirtless man who was the passenger can be seen frantically attempting to attach a tow cable from another vehicle.

But as the huge waves continue to roll in during the early hours of Sunday morning, he is forced to retreat several times.

The terrifying ordeal was captured on film by a Sydney family who were camping nearby over the weekend, Nine reported.

The video, which was posted to the Facebook page ‘I got bogged at Redhead Beach’, has now gone viral, garnering a flurry of comments from social media users.

‘That must have been absolutely terrifying… the size of those waves,’ one person wrote.

Another said: ‘One question, how stupid someone could be to go with his car in such a position?’

Chris Croat, who lives in the area and runs the Facebook page, said someone from the semi-submerged vehicle ran up the beach at around 3am to a campsite to ask for help.

‘They managed to get the vehicle out of the water eventually but had to be towed off the beach by two vehicles later that morning,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

Despite the rescue the car could not be salvaged and is a write-off.
