A private jet with the presumptive Texas House speaker aboard was captured in dramatic video skidding off a runway and crashing into a field after its brakes failed on landing.
Texas State Representative Dade Phelan was unharmed in the terrifying accident which happened during a heavy rainstorm Wednesday morning at the Angelina County Airport, in Burke.
A second passenger, one of Phelan’s staff members, also escaped unscathed while the pilot of the Citation CD-551-SP suffered minor injuries. The pilot, who wasn’t named, was later seen walking around the crash site unassisted.
‘It was an accident, but we’re all good,’ Phelan told 12 News. ‘Everyone is fine. We had some damage to the plane. The pilot did an excellent job of mitigating injuries, and we are all good.’

The jet skidded off the runway and crashed into a field after its breaks failed on landing at the Angelina County Airport, in Burke, on Wednesday morning
Conditions were said to be ‘difficult’ on account of a rainstorm that was blanketing the area at the time
In video footage of the crash shared to Instagram, the jet is seen speeding towards the end of the runway, and then skidding down a small ditch and across a road.
The aircraft then strikes a small bank, lifting it into the air momentarily before crashing through a wire fence and into a field.
The person recording the frightening incident is heard exclaiming, ‘Oh my God’ as the plane comes to a shattering halt.
Manager of the airport, Gary Letney, said the plane had been landing when its brakes went out, causing the pilot to overshoot the runway.
‘In talking to the pilot, he said that when he landed the anti-lock brakes failed on the jet and so he cut them off and cut them back on, and when he did he had no brakes at all,’ Letney told KLTV.
Letney explained that the airport has a breakaway at the end of the runway which is designed to keep planes from flipping over if they do manage to overrun it.
‘It breaks off pretty easy, which it did, it broke off. But then the neighbors on the other side of the fence, it was a hog wire fence, and it actually caught that plane, kind of in mid-air, and kept it from really running a long way,’ he said.

A number of fire departments attended the scene in case of a fire. Officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety also rushed to the site of the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board arrived later in the afternoon to begin its investigation into the crash.
Phelan is the presumptive next speaker of the Texas House. He said he has the votes to assume the role, and even has the backing of GOP Gov. Greg Abbott
Letney, meanwhile, said he believes the crash has left the Citation CD-551-SP completely totaled.
‘The wings weren’t in the right position, it broke off all the landing gears, there was some underneath stuff that it pulled off that’s down there. So it’s pretty big damage.’
Phelan was first confirmed to be on the plane by the office of State Rep. Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin). Phelan was said to be on his way to meet with Ashby when the crash occurred.
Ashby’s office said in a statement: ‘Everyone on the plane is safe and we’re grateful for that.’
According to FlightAware.com, the plane was arriving in from Austin, and was later scheduled to leave at 12:19pm and continue on to Tyler for landing at 12:38pm.
Phelan said he is traveling more frequently as he prepares to become Texas House speaker.
The Republican from Beaumont has said he has the votes to assumed the role and he has even drawn the support of GOP Gov. Greg Abbott.
