Are you using perfume wrong? Beauty experts reveal their ultimate fragrance guide – and why you should NEVER just have one on the go

  • The beauty experts from Mecca have revealed a concise guide to using perfume
  • It’s important to own a ‘signature scent’ and build a ‘wardrobe’ of fragrances
  • While there are no rules, it can create a sense of identity and match seasons

From owning a ‘signature scent’ to collecting a ‘wardrobe’ of fragrances, the beauty experts from Mecca Australia have revealed a four-step guide to using perfume.

Wearing perfume can create a sense of identity and can remind you of fond memories every time you return to a particular scent.

The beauty experts described fragrance as an ‘art form that exists to make you feel however you wish to feel’.

1. Have one ‘signature scent’

Among your personal collection of fragrances, you should have one ‘signature scent’ to turn to.

This not only makes choosing a perfume easy before rushing out the door, but others will also begin to associate you with this scent – so it’s important to choose wisely.

Using one particular fragrance regularly also implies expensive alternative scents will be used sparingly and only on special occasions.

2. Choose a scent for day and another for night

It’s essential to own different fragrances for the day and night, as recommended by the beauty experts.

Similarly to wearing heavier makeup in the evening, scents can also be layered in the same way.

‘A post-work fragrance change will work like a mental on/off switch, letting your brain know it’s time to play,’ the experts wrote.

But if adding an evening perfume on top of a day perfume, it’s important to ensure the fragrances are from the same scent family – such as wood/woody, oriental or floral.

3. Own a scent for every season

As the seasons change, so too should your fragrances to match your mood, lifestyle and outfit.

In summer turn to fruity, light notes, in winter opt for woody, spice blends and florals for spring.

‘This approach helps to break up the year, attach memories to each season (and then remind you of them the following years), and can stop you from getting bored of a single scent,’ experts said.

Fragrance enhancers can also be used to compliment and prolong the current scent being worn.

The best way to choose the right perfume:

Don’t try too many fragrances at once

Understand the different notes

Follow your instinct and what you prefer

Shop in store rather than online

Don’t rush the process

4. Own a ‘wardrobe’ of fragrances

The final expert recommendation is to own a ‘wardrobe’ of fragrances, or a collection of perfumes, to ensure you aren’t limiting yourself.

‘Whether your wardrobe is a scaled to five or 35, it creates space for self-expression, subtle escapism, and growth – if you tire of a certain scent, there’s no pressure to find and commit to a new one full-time,’ the experts said.

This tactic will allow you to gradually build an overflowing range of perfumes, each with their own scent and flair.
